Review – Star Trek Starship Collection – D4 Bird Of Prey

Today I am going to review the Eaglemoss Star Trek Collection Special Edition: D4 Bird Of Prey.

First thing you are going to say 20150416_220633is “What? There was no D4 in Star Trek!” Well you would be right, there was never one shown on the television series. However, in the JJ Abrams Star Trek: Into Darkness there were several. Yes, that is the class of ship that attacked Kirk and the gang in Mudd’s ship on Qo’nos.

Now I have two of these special editions, both from the same movie. They are the USS Vengenace and now the D4 Bird Of Prey. I do have to say this one is REALLY nice. Taking the ship out of the packaging, I was first struck by the quality of the model. On both wings are mounted aggressive weapon cannons and not the typical strips, something different in the JJ Verse. The ship is painted in a simple gunmetal grey with various markings. The wings are of course not articulated, unlike as is seen in Star Trek: Into Darkness, however they looks like they could be.

The bottom side of the model is 20150416_220749not very detailed however after looking at the drawings in the accompanying magazine and a quick look at the movie. I am not certain that there are any markings on the bottom. In the same way that today’s fighter jets have little to no markings on the bottom.

The accompanying magazine for this issue is different then the others in the series. Normally they have a section with some of the fictional history, however in this magazine, the entire focus is on how the designers did their work. Not as exciting in my opinion.

I would give the D4 Bird Of Prey from Eaglemoss a 9.5 out of 10 for cool Star Trek Geek Factor.
