Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online (STO) is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) that was launched in February, 2010, set in the Star Trek universe 30 years after the events that took place in the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis. The once-strong alliance between the Klingon Empire and the Federation has collapsed; both sides are now at war, while the Romulan Star Empire continues to struggle with the loss of their home world over 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the Dominion has spent this time rebuilding its forces, and the major threat of the Borg has returned. The game allows players to immerse themselves in the universe as a starship Captain..

Every Star Trek fan has envisioned themselves in the command chair, at the helm, or deep in the bowels of engineering of their favorite starship at least once. I am sure every Trekkie/Trekker has had this dream at least once. Well, that is where Star Trek Online comes into play. Using references made famous from 50 years of Trek history, players get to interact with story lines, ships, and characters they have known for years and grown to love. As you progress through the game, your character gains new ships, new abilities and new items.

Back in July of 2016, a new expansion set updated the game play, adding a new subfaction of the federation. The Agents of Yesterday update allowed players to create a new character, beginning their story back in the time period of the original series (the 23rd century) and eventually catapulting forward to the game’s current time setting

On January 26th, Star Trek Online will launch a new expansion, Season Twelve: Reckoning.  This expansion will include a new episode called “Of Signs and Portents,” featuring Star Trek alum Tony Todd as General Rodek. There will also be updates to R&D crafting and an expansion of the games map of the Alpha Quadrant (including 15 new sectors). I am looking forward to the new season and playing in the expanded map.

I joined in the game’s second season and continued playing through the ranks to that of Fleet Admiral. Although the game can sometimes become repetitive and static, I still enjoy playing. I always look forward to new content and new adventures the game holds with each new update.
