10 Year Anniversary!?! The First Officer reflects on the past 5 years.

Tiburon 10th LogoWhile most Star Trek groups have a hard time making it to the end of their first five year mission the USS Tiburon has made to the end of her SECOND five year tour.

I admit, I wasn’t here when the Tiburon’s journey began. I saw her set sail while on the bridge of the USS Omega Glory. Little did I know that only five years later the Omega Glory would retire from Starfleet (after surviving exactly 10 years to the day) and that I would transfer over and be here to be a part of the second five years and go into the start of the third.

When my tour of duty began here, membership was down and the active members were a die hard bunch. The crew had recently lost several individuals to an out of state move.  Worse yet a Plank Owner and ship’s legend had also passed. Over the years the ship’s membership has rebounded and seen the addition of several members new to active fandom arrive. The Wolfson family, Chris S, Marshall M, and others too numerous to mention beamed on board for their first tours. Simultaniously we had several experienced members with years of experience also join up. Lee M, Gary H, and myself lending our experience to this mix of new and old.

When I started the big monthly activity was bowling two games at a local bowling alley and we also attended a few local festivals from time to time. Now? We’re doing periodic hikes, are regular attendees (how about every home game including the playoffs) at Denver Outlaws MLL games and Denver Comic Con (since year one), and are building center pieces for convention displays (hello Borg Regeneration Alcove). We’ve also found ourselves attending other conventions AND doing major presentations at Star Trek Night for the Sky Sox. Rumor has it that we’ve also been asked to start putting on full blown panels at various cons. WOW!

What does the future hold? I’ve heard scuttlebutt and talk about several things from some in the Command Staff meetings, but in reality, only time will tell.

On Saturday, July 11, at 11 am at the swim beach at Cherry Creek Reservoir we will be celebrating the past 10 years of service to Starfleet by the USS Tiburon. On that day, we should remember to raise a toast to the Plank Owners (i.e. the founding members), give a big salute to the current members, and tip our caps to those yet to join us in the fun. As AC/DC once sang “For those about to rock we salute you. . . . We salute you one more time. We salute you ALL!”

Congratulations USS Tiburon on this, your TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

Sincerely,

The First Officer
