From the Hole

I recently reflected on the roughly three years that I’ve spent with the crew of the USS Tiburon (out of nearly 20 years of activity with organized fandom). In this reflection I found that in most of the groups that I’ve been with if one or two “important” members of the group aren’t available for a particular activity then that activity usually gets cancelled or is, at best, very poorly attended – only one or two members actually show up. These “important” members typically include the chapter’s Commanding and /or First Officers and, when involved, their respective spouse(s).  This trend, however, does not extend to the USS Tiburon.

For example, when I joined the group three years ago “The Skipper” (as we like to call our CO) had to work during the Labor Day weekend. Instead of cancelling our plans and saying better luck next year the event was held. Better still everyone that attended enjoyed themselves.

Perhaps an even better example occured within the last couple of weeks. With the Skipper and Chief of Communications off to the International Conference and the First Officer not available for real life reasons we still held an event. A group of four of us got together for dinner and, eventually, Dave and Busters for some time at the arcade (interest in the event was also expressed by several others that couldn’t make it due to real life priorities which is totally understandable in my opinion).

This is not to say that we, as a group, don’t enjoy the company of the Skipper and everyone else on board. We really do miss them when they’re not able to attend things. It does say something about the group as a whole, however, when “important” members can heed the call of real life and the rest of the group can still go and have fun.

‘Til next month I’m sliding the rock back over The Hole.

Signed,

The SO
