Memorial Day

Memorial Day

This is Chief Science officer Jennifer Sontag reporting from the bridge of the Uss Tiburon.  I know that it’s still a couple of weeks to go to Memorial Day but I thought I would get a jump on it. I just wanted to remind everyone not to forget those that have come before us and paved the way with lives. I have also learned some interesting facts about the Memorial Day.

  • it dates back to the Civil war, it was originally called Decoration day and it was officially changed to Memorial Day in 1882
  • In the days of the Civil war, it was observed as people put flowers on the graves of the confederate and union graves
  • In a twist the southern states it wasn’t observed on the last Monday of May until after World War one. They observed it another day.
  • Starting in the 1950’s 1,200 members of the third United States infantry put flags onto the all the graves in Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC. In total they put out 260,000 flags onto the graves and patrol the cemetery so that no flag will fall over.
  • For many of us we put out a flag to remember those who have fallen, I have found out the correct way to hang the flag for Memorial Day. The  flag is raised all the way up and lowered to half mast until noon and it’s raised back up to all the way up. It’s done this way to remember those that have given their lives.

Thank you to all those that have given their lives for this country and I hope that their sacrifice won’t have been in vain. They gave their lives so that we can live in the land of the free and home of the brave.
